Afternoon Scrum 10/21/09

  • The Pittsburgh Penguins have been playing very well thus far. Just ask the St. Louis Blues who took it on the chin against the defending Stanley Cup Champions last night by a score of 5-1. It ain't all Primanti sandwiches and Yuenglings though, as D Sergi Gonchar looks to be on the shelf with a wrist injury for up to 6 weeks. Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette will get you up to speed.

  • Vancouver is 3-5-0 and still looking for their first road win. G Roberto Luongo (you've heard of him, right?) has an .897 save % and a 3.22 GAA in 8 games. Hardly the stuff of Olympic Gold Medals. The Canucks travel to Chicago tonite to take on the Hawks. Here's the Vancouver Sun's outlook on the game. Meanwhile, in Chicago the goaltending situation is even more precarious as Cristobal Huet seems iffy at best as the #1 netminder. Backup/1A goalie Antti Niemi will get the start tonite against the Canucks, so sayeth the Chicago Sun Times.

  • More news on the injury front as Boston Bruins F Marc Savard is out with a broken foot. Apparently Savard originally injured the foot in the preseason and the extent of the injury was just discovered on Tuesday. Are you kidding me? The Boston Globe has the story here.

  • Finally, since this is a CBJ-centric site after all, the transcript of the Puckrakers chat from the good folks at the Columbus Dispatch. Folks, I read a lot of hockey coverage from beat writers all over the league and believe me when I say Columbus fans are lucky to have the scope and breadth of coverage the Dispatch provides. Here's the link.
